Beauceron dogs are the largest in size of all French shepherds:
Its name comes from "La Beauce", a rural region south west of Paris. Although it is a great unknown outside of France, within that country it is known that it is an ancient and traditional race. The first thing to recognize is that its most remote history is not clear, since we do not have written records prior to the year 1560. The first mentions to shepherd dogs of this type come from written texts of the sixteenth century. "Dog breed beauceron"
He was raised in the north of France, mainly to work in rural areas and countryside, where he could play different roles, such as being a shepherd and custodian of livestock, especially herds of sheep. He also served as a watchdog, guarding the owner's farms and property, as well as defending family members against any stranger. They had red marks on their legs, and that's where their other name comes from: "bas rouge".
Until recently, it did not have a well defined physical standard, and there were different colors, which included gray, griffon dogs, and completely black. There were also specimens of long hair and short hair. It is in the twentieth century when the two branches are definitely separated, and the beauceron is born, with short hair and standardized morphological characteristics that we know today. Mr. Pierre Megnin plays an important role in this process. In 1922 its standard had already been set and the first French canine club of "the friends of the Beauceron" was created.
Then he was employed in the Second World War as a military dog, to transport wounded, carry messages on the battle front and help detect mines and explosives. And still today, the beauceron shepherd is employed as a police dog in France.
